The UC Tax Auditor position will be assigned to provide coverage to Vermont employers in the Chittenden County Region. Residency in Chittenden County is strongly preferred as regular travel within this region is required. This position will audit employer payroll and disbursement records to determine whether an employer is properly reporting wages for the purpose of State Unemployment Insurance (UI). Responsibilities include conducting various field assignments to obtain delinquent reports, unreported/misreported wages, business registrations, and address potential fraud. This position will make formal determinations of findings, such as employer liability for UI and worker misclassification, as well as interpret and apply state and federal laws, regulations, and policies to support findings.
The UC Tax Auditor acts as a liaison for the Department of Labor to employers, claimants, and the general public. We are looking for a candidate that feels their most engaged when performing a wide variety of tasks, is continually busy, and focused on providing excellent customer service. In addition, the Department is looking for someone who has excellent written and verbal communication skills, can understand our regulations and provide sound advice to customers, and has the tact and professionalism to address uncooperative or hostile attitudes during investigations.
Primary duties of the UC Tax Auditor I will include:
* Utilize sound judgment and knowledge of financial investigative tools/techniques to establish an investigative plan.
* Initiate investigation by gathering facts and evidence; running appropriate database checks; examining the current control environment; and preparing investigative summaries that document findings.
* Maintain current knowledge and awareness of investigative/fraud techniques, privacy laws, bank regulations, investigation and incident handling policy and procedure.
* Develop and maintain a wide range of internal and external business relationships.
* Be capable and comfortable with professional interaction on the executive level.

Duties are performed at assigned regional offices, Central Office and in the field. Considerable travel is required, for which a personal means of transportation is necessary. Incumbents may encounter uncooperative or hostile attitudes during investigations for which considerable human relation skills are required. Significant pressure to meet timeframes and deadlines is to be expected.
Bachelor's degree in accounting, public or business administration AND one (1) year or more of professional level auditing or accounting experience OR two (2) years or more in Unemployment Compensation.
OR
Associate's degree in accounting, public or business administration AND three (3) years or more of professional level auditing or accounting experience OR four (4) years or more in Unemployment Compensation.
OR
High School diploma or equivalent AND five (5) years or more of professional level accounting or auditing experience OR six (6) years or more in Unemployment Compensation.
